Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Foster's Group Ltd.'s A$3.1 billion ($2.4 billion) hostile bid for Southcorp Ltd. is a ``mistake,'' because it's paying too much to buy a company that's recovering from a record loss, while trying to boost earnings at its own wine unit, brokers including Merrill Lynch & Co. said.

Tabcorp managing director Matthew Slater has told the company's annual general meeting that overall revenue in the first four months of the financial year is up 7 per cent on a normalised basis.

THE News Corporation Limited chairman, Rupert Murdoch, has admitted to being frustrated about the media giant's low share price despite a strong balance sheet and a significant pickup in advertising.



But writing in the company's annual report, released at the weekend, Mr Murdoch said the group's balance sheet was exceptionally strong as a result of the positive momentum in almost all of its key businesses.

ANZ - ANZ Banking Group Ltd - up 27 cents at $20.02.



WBC - Westpac Banking Corp - down 28 cents at $16.33.



Most of Australia's major banks were higher after the Reserve Bank of Australia raised interest rates by an expected 25 basis points to 4.75 per cent yesterday.



Economists expect the RBA could raise interest rates again as early as next month.

Healthcare and logistics conglomerate Mayne Group Ltd will look at offloading its logistics activities in the second half of 2002 and boss Peter Smedley will leave the company.


ERG - ERG LTD - up four cents at 37 cents.


Shares in ticketing systems operator ERG Ltd jumped more than 12 per cent after the company announced a $65 million staged settlement between its partly owned subsidiary OneLink Transit Systems and the Victorian government.


CPU - COMPUTERSHARE LTD - down 14 cents at $1.96.


Shares in Computershare Ltd tumbled as investors reeled at a warning about the troubled share registry's earnings and its surprise decision to cancel an analysts' briefing.
